Chasing urban legends, the three of us slipped into an abandoned hospital on the outskirts of town. Once a bustling general hospital, it was shut down 20 years ago after an unexplained fire, with rumors that its elevator moves on its own at night. The shattered glass doors at the entrance let in a stench of dust and mold. Our flashlights revealed peeling wallpaper, rusted medical equipment, and cracked floor tiles that clicked underfoot. Reaching the basement elevator, we heard a low “clank… clank…” of machinery, and despite no one being there, the doors slid open. Curiosity got the better of us, and we stepped inside. The doors closed, and the elevator began moving on its own. None of the buttons worked, and the floor indicator flickered wildly. Suddenly, through the elevator’s glass window, we saw a shadowy figure in a white hospital gown standing outside, staring at us without a face. The elevator jerked to a stop, the lights flickered, and cold sweat trickled down our backs. As the shadow pressed a hand against the glass, a raspy voice whispered, “Not… human…” Panicking, we slammed the buttons until the elevator lurched back to life, stopping at the ground floor.
