The five of us planned to spend a summer night at a lakeside campsite. The lake reflected the moonlight, and the air carried the scent of damp grass. The crackling campfire and distant frog calls filled the night. Locals spoke of a village that sank into the lake long ago. In the middle of the night, I stepped out of the tent to use the bathroom and heard a soft “splash… splash…” from the lake. Shining my flashlight, I froze—one of our tents was gone. Waking the others, we found wet footprints leading from the empty spot toward the lake. Following them, the prints vanished at the water’s edge, and a hazy figure shimmered on the lake’s surface, waving as if beckoning us. Suddenly, the flashlight flickered, and the remaining tents flapped loudly despite no wind. Screaming, we fled to the car, trembling until morning.
